Galaxie Business Equipment was founded in 1972 by James and Dolores French, starting humbly with sales and service of typewriters from their garage in Oxford, Kansas. Early on, the company served schools and businesses across Harper, Sumner, and Cowley Counties.
In 1981, a significant turning point came when their son, Nathan French, joined full-time, and the business relocated to Winfield, Kansas. Around the same time, Edward “Friday” Lockyear—a lifelong Winfield resident and expert office machine repair technician—became part of the team, strengthening Galaxie’s service capabilities.
As the company grew, so did the family involvement. Nathan’s wife, Trudy, and Milton Konstantinidis—James and Dolores’ son-in-law—joined the Galaxie family. In 1993, Milton brought his computer industry expertise to launch a new computer services division, specializing in document imaging and storage solutions using Kofax Capture and LaserFiche software.
The third generation also became part of the business, with Nathan’s sons Eli (and his wife Lindsay), Reuben, Samuel (and wife Caitlin), and Uriah (and wife Jhenny) all contributing to the company’s ongoing success.
Over the years, Galaxie expanded its product offerings beyond typewriters to include Sharp copiers, HON office furniture, and a comprehensive range of office supplies, allowing the company to provide complete business solutions. The company footprint grew to include three main street locations, a warehouse, and a second office in Ponca City, Oklahoma—established in 2021 at 122 N. 1st Street in downtown Ponca City. Though serving Northern Oklahoma for many years prior, this location deepened Galaxie’s community ties in Kay County.
Today, Galaxie employs 22 people, with 12 being family members. Despite its growth and evolution over 52 years, the company remains committed to the small-town values upon which it was founded. Honest, dependable customer service and strong customer relationships have always been—and continue to be—at the heart of Galaxie’s mission.
In 2010, Galaxie was honored as the Jeffery Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year for the State of Kansas by the U.S. Small Business Administration, a proud milestone that reflected the company’s dedication and community impact.
Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, Galaxie Business Equipment strives to provide the highest level of service across a broad spectrum of products and solutions to the people of Southern Kansas and Northern Oklahoma—always with a personal touch.
